You can modify one resource to address the needs of various learners
· Use the provided text book for students reading on grade level who are proficient at material.
· Modify the text for advanced readers so the work includes extension of the skills.
· Modify the text for low level readers who are advanced in the skill so the reading is simpler but the skill includes an extension of skills.
· Modify the text for those reading below grade level but who are proficient at the skill.

How to modify texts in Microsoft Word:
  1. Type text into a word document (or cut and paste from on-line).
  2. On the tool bar, select TOOLS. Select OPTIONS.
  3. Select the SPELLING and GRAMMAR tab.
  4. Check the box to show readability statistics.
  5. Highlight the text.
  6. Select TOOLS.
  7. Select SPELLING and GRAMMAR.
  8. After Word checks the spelling and grammar, if will give you a grade level. (Remember this is an approximation, and a lot of variables can affect the grade level.)
  9. Revise the text for higher or lower level readers.
    1. Higher level – longer sentences, fewer examples, more advanced vocabulary
    2. Lower level – shorter sentences, less advanced vocabulary; consider bullets and fewer details or descriptors
